Privacy Policy

Effective 17 October 2026

The ShotZen macOS app does not collect or transmit your personal data. Screenshots, recordings, and system audio are processed on your Mac. This policy also explains this support website and information you choose to email us.

Data collection in the app

ShotZen has no account, sign-in, advertising, analytics, telemetry, or third-party tracking SDKs. It does not send captures, audio, settings, or usage data to the developer. This applies to users of every age.

Screen and system audio permission

ScreenCaptureKit is used for screenshots, scrolling capture, and selected-region recording. macOS screen-capture permission is required; its name varies by macOS version. Capturing starts only after your shortcut or menu command, including a delay you request. Region recording includes system sound and runs until you stop it. ShotZen does not request or record microphone audio, and does not monitor your screen when idle. To let you click a window, and to recognise apps that keep their windows out of captures, ShotZen reads the list of open windows — their position, size, and owning app — when you start a capture. During a scrolling capture it notices that you are scrolling, so it knows when to take the next frame; it does not see what you type or where you click. None of this is stored or sent anywhere.

Local processing and temporary files

Screenshots and annotations are processed in memory and can be copied, saved as PNG or JPEG, or kept in floating pins. Recordings and GIF conversion use local temporary files; the app attempts to remove them after export or cancellation. Copy GIF keeps a local cached GIF so it can still be pasted after quitting or relaunching. That cached file remains until a later Copy GIF replaces it; older copies are then removed. Saved files remain until you delete them. Text recognition (2.0 and later) uses the recognition built into macOS and runs entirely on your Mac; the recognized text goes only to the clipboard and is not uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere.

Settings and file access

Language, appearance, shortcuts, output quality, and saving preferences are stored in macOS preferences on your Mac. Access to a folder you choose is remembered with a security-scoped bookmark. The sandboxed app can use its own container and locations you authorize through the system file picker. It ships without network client or server entitlements and does not upload your files.

Clipboard and destinations you choose

Images, recognized text, and GIF file references can be placed on the system clipboard at your request or according to your capture settings. Other apps you paste into may read or upload that content. A save folder you choose may be synced by iCloud Drive or another service. Those transfers are controlled by macOS, the destination app, or your sync service and follow their privacy policies. In Select Text on a pin, macOS may also offer actions for detected links, addresses, or phone numbers; they run only when you choose one, in the app macOS opens.
